BIOSKOPE 2018 | Worldbuilding Films: Soylent Green (1973)

LIMITED SPACES: Join us for our first ever Film night with a twist! In a future dystopian setting, discover how pollution and scarcity of resources might impact New York in 2022 as we make the only food source meant for a starving population: Soylent Green.

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL. Those who register early will get good, tasty cold-pressed healthy juice in reusable hard glass bottle courtesy of Green Hydrant, brewed at Katong. One of our small ways to go local and help support the surrounding Katong community.

In a densely overpopulated, starving New York City of the future, NYPD detective Robert Thorn (Charlton Heston) investigates the murder of an executive at rations manufacturer Soylent Corporation. With the help of elderly academic Solomon "Sol" Roth (Edward G. Robinson), Thorn begins to make real progress -- until the governor mysteriously pulls the plug. Obsessed with the mystery, Thorn steps out from behind the badge and launches his own investigation into the murder.

BIOSKOPE (inspired by the word 'movie theatre' in Bahasa Indonesia and 'an early movie projector' in English) is a series exploring less popular, unique films that may bring thought-provoking and inspiring perspectives into our society. Beyond movie screening, audiences will get to experience heads-on sessions, to provide an interactive element to the film medium.

In January, we will be exploring the what-ifs of a bleak future: How does overpopulation affect our cities? What are the horrors that the people would face under a world where the choice of food is but only a green wafer? How would our protagonists react to the new world much different than ours?

For the duration of the event, there will be finger food and refreshment, along with a 'Soylent Green-inspired' making session, where you get to craft your own version of Soylent Green using seaweed and a multitude of 'green' ingredients to choose from ;)

We will also be experimenting with an innovation tool that strategists, scenario planners and futurists use to brainstorm and prepare for the future.

We're also helping to fundraise for future community outreach initiatives. Proceeds help cover refreshment, tools, material & facilitation costs, grow BIOSKOPE, space rental and build up the ground-up innovation movement.

P.S: For those unfamiliar to Soylent Green, we kindly advise you not to Google it for an optimal experience ;)
